Certified personal trainer Paige Waehner elevates strength training to the real Fountain of Youth – capable of reversing “the aging process all the way down to the cellular level”. She doesn’t dismiss better nutrition, stress-reduction, smoking-cessation, or other forms of exercise as ways to reduce your biological age but puts strength training at the top of the heap.
According to Waehner, weight training helps avoid age-related muscle loss which can prevent injuries. And it will also build confidence and minimize anxiety and depression – and also explains all of the other long-term health benefits. She also assures us – my favorite phrase – “and the best part is that it’s never too late to start!”
Strength Training for Seniors provides a detailed twelve-week strength program to help you safely and gradually build power, balance, and resistance with simple, easy-to-follow exercises. Waehner covers resistance training, weight lifting, staying motivated, everything you need to get started (with helpful, very specific details), plus cardio, core, balance, and flexibility workouts in addition to strength training ones. .
The remainder of the book walks you through the twelve week program with step-by step, day-by-day instructions illustrated with clear photos. I am starting on the program myself and will add personally commentary in a month or so.
