The Nuts and Bolts of Coaching

Today six in ten Americans have a chronic disease – most of which can be prevented, managed or reversed by lifestyle modifications. A health coach can help you make those challenging changes.

We partner with our clients to help them identify their optimal vision for their future, to create a plan that feels doable with obtainable steps and then take action to realize their goals – our job is to support the client every step of the way. We see you, the client, as expert on yourself – you intuitively know what is best for you and it is our job to facilitate the changes that you want to make, by creating space for you to assess, set and accomplish your goals.

Using the essential holistic elements of Integrative Health Coaching – skills, partnerships, processes, and mindful awareness – we help our clients identify, achieve and sustain beneficial health behaviors. We help you to grow into your best self by encouraging you to set small, realistic lifestyle goals and then, as your support and accountability partner, to realize them. Together, we set mini-goals for next week, and then the week after that and the week after that. Slowly new habits are established. There are missteps and disappointments but generally far more successes than not – three steps forward, an occasional step back.

Change is hard and it is rarely a linear path – and to maintain a change is even more challenging. There will be setbacks and struggles. We help you identify the barriers, work around them and come out the other side. To do that without support, is often impossible. Coaches provide the degree of assistance and accountability that you request.

Most important is that, YOU, the client, are in charge. HWC recognizes that the client owns the expertise on him or herself. You decide how much and how far – and you draw the lines. There are continual check-ins and reevaluations on how the process is working for you – are we moving too quickly or not quickly enough? What are the successes? What are the barriers to change? How do we mitigate them? At the end of each session, we agree on the next steps. I send you an email reiterating them along with any specific content that you have requested. If you have any problems between sessions, just email and we work them out. It is an iterative process that works.

Because making change is hard and it takes time, I ask for a minimum three-month commitment. Clients can choose to schedule their sessions in various formats, depending on their situation and how ably they can manage their goals and commitments.

Most of our sessions are via Zoom video conference. It’s very easy to manage and requires minimal technical expertise. You just need a computer (desktop or laptop) or a tablet with a camera and internet access. Smartphones work as well, but I have found either a computer or tablet is preferable and more comfortable for the client. Occasionally, I also coach via phone or in-person. Prior to our first session, you would receive an invitation by email with a link – you just click on the link (or copy/paste it into your browser) and we are online together. Still have some concerns? We can do a test run in advance and walk through the process. The benefit is that we can see each other, just as in a one-on-one in-person meeting, which encourages a more intimate, personal connection – but there is no travel involved.

Each session includes a follow-up email from the coach and an optional email from the client to check-in with issues or concerns between meetings.

Payment

Payment is in advance via Zelle or by check. If you have a demonstrable financial hardship or are on Medicaid,
please contact me.

I set aside a percentage of my fees for partial grants.

Insurance

Are Health Coaching fees covered by Medicare or other insurance policies? Some insurance policies do cover health coaching but not Medicare or Medicaid. Yet!! Soon, we hope. In October 2019, the American Medical Association (AMA) approved new Category III Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) Codes for NBC-HWC health and well-being coaching effective January 1, 2020. This is the test period to prove efficacy. The next step is the approval of Category I CPT codes that are actually billing codes.
